Fort Saskatchewan Community Overview
Fort Saskatchewan is a city of 14,957 (2006 census) located 25 kilometres (16 mi) northeast of downtown Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The two cities' boundaries touch across the North Saskatchewan River.
Fort Saskatchewan is a booming community that offers many amenities to its residents while still maintaining its "small town" feel. It has two high schools, four junior high schools, and seven elementary schools. It has a large indoor swimming pool with a hot-tub, a sauna, and a slide, over 35 kilometres (22 mi) of paved bike paths, three indoor arenas, a small museum, and numerous parks. The recently opening of the Dow Centennial Centre, a multi-purpose activities centre, added a 500 seat auditorium, indoor soccer field, ice rink, and a fitness facility to Fort Saskatchewan's attractions.
Elk Island National Park is located immediately southeast of the city.
Fort Saskatchewan is home to the Fort Saskatchewan Athletics of the Sunburst Baseball League. Former college and professional baseball players make up the core of the baseball club. The Fort Saskatchewan Traders, of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, were long a part of the city, though after the 2006-2007 season, the team relocated to St. Albert and was renamed The St. Albert Steel.
